Do I Need Vitamin Supplements?

You want to be as healthy as possible. If this past year has shown us anything, it is not to take our health for granted. You exercise daily, you get eight hours of sleep a night, you wash your hands, and you avoid bad habits that negatively affect your health. You try to eat right, but is it enough? Do you or your kid need to add vitamin supplements in order to give your body what you really need to stay healthy and truly thrive?

What are Vitamin Supplements?

Vitamins are organic compounds that people need in small quantities. Most vitamins need to come from food because the body either does not produce them or produces very little. When you hear things like "fruit is healthy for you!" what this really means is that fruit is high in the vitamins your body needs, including vitamin C

That being said, our modern diets too often involve more french fries than fresh fruit. Just because it's convenient to get a quick dinner doesn't mean it has the nutrients your body requires. Having too little of any particular vitamin may increase the risk of developing certain health issues. This is where vitamin supplements can come in to make up the difference.

Do I Need Vitamin Supplements?

Some healthy people don’t need any extra help, they get what their body needs from food alone. Many others, though, need to take extra vitamin supplements. Which category do you fall into? We recommend adding supplements to your diet if you:

#1 Are pregnant. You may not get enough iron from food, especially if you get morning sickness and your body doesn't have time to absorb the nutrients. Women who are pregnant need even more vitamins than they otherwise would, especially folic acid.

#2 Eat a restricted or limited diet. It’s harder to get some nutrients, like vitamin B12 or calcium, if you leave out certain food groups. That may happen if you’re a vegetarian, vegan, lactose intolerant, or have a wheat allergy.

#3 Are older than 50. Your body starts to absorb less of vitamin D and vitamin B12 as you get older. After you reach the age of 50, you may need extra help to get enough.

#4 Have certain genetic or health conditions. You may have trouble absorbing nutrients if you have certain conditions, like Celiac disease, cancer, or an autoimmune disorder.
